Wedding Reception Made Easy

For our wedding reception, we had two problems: we wanted to keep the budget down and we had guests with certain nutritional requirements: a couple of our guests are gluten free and another in nightshade free. Sarah came up with a great idea that would solve both problems—make the reception a potluck. Everyone brings their own dish, and we keep our budget down by not having to feed 50+ guests, and anyone with nutritional requirement would have something to eat.

That solved the problem for the moment, but after awhile we came to the conclusion of “what do we bring?” As the bride and groom, we decided that the obvious choice for us would be to provide the wedding cake. We discussed several options, such a purchasing a cake or two at Winco or Costco. For any gluten free guests, we could provide gluten free cupcakes.

However, after discussing the idea with our gluten free guests, Sarah came to me with a better answer. Divine Cupcake bakes cupcakes that are organic and vegan, and can be opted to be gluten free as well. So Sarah called to find out how much it could cost to have Divine Cupcake cater our wedding. The employee she spoke with did not have access to the information we needed, so Sarah made an appointment for the two of us to speak with a consultant (in actuality, the store manager) who would discuss the options available to us.

We met with the consultant at Divine Cupcake a few weeks ago. She explained that we needed to order our cupcakes in batches of a dozen because that’s how many they bake at one time. However, we could also purchase separate bride and groom cupcakes separately—they would just make sure to bake those cupcakes for their display case that day. We decided on 4 dozen—that would give us 48 cupcakes. If after we receive all of our RSVPs we need more than that, we can order more. Divine Cupcake just needs any changes to the order at least 2 weeks before the wedding. The 4 types of cupcakes we decided to order for our wedding are: Lime n’ a Coconut, The Electric Pumpkin (gluten free, which cost a little bit extra), The Classic, and The Choco-Classic. Sarah is planning on having another Lime n’ a Coconut as her bride cupcake while my groom cupcake is going to be The Swizzle Stick—this is a spicy cupcake that I didn’t think enough people at our wedding would be bold enough to try out, so we chose not to order it as one of the 4 dozen.

In addition to the cupcakes, Divine Cupcake offers a variety of trays in which to display the cupcakes. They’re layered like most wedding cakes, and you can decorate them yourself. We chose a cardboard display that would hold the number of cupcakes we need. The total for the whole order came to $141—however it will also cost about $5 more for the separate bride and groom cupcakes and another $5 for delivery fee. All Divine Cupcake requires is a $50 deposit to hold the order for a particular day. We did not, at the time, have the money needed to pay even the deposit, and told them we’d come back when we had the money for our order.

Today, we went in to pay for our order. We paid for the entire order of $151. However, weddings never go completely smoothly. Next time I'll discuss the complications that made our wedding a little exciting.
